Perspective

Kerala’s development prospects are closely tied to the condition of its natural environment. The session addresses the need to ensure that economic growth and environmental sustainability are pursued together. The session will examine the major challenges that threaten this balance: the rising frequency and intensity of climate-related disasters such as landslides and floods, and the increase in human–wildlife conflict caused by habitat fragmentation and changing ecological patterns. These issues reflect deeper structural pressures and require an integrated approach to governance, land-use planning, and community preparedness. The session will consider how scientific data, early-warning systems, and community preparedness can be combined to improve disaster risk management; how the State can strengthen both natural and built environments against growing climate risks; how Kerala can strengthen resilience by aligning environmental sustainability with social protection and economic planning.

The session will examine the steps required to create a practical roadmap for a climate-resilient Kerala. The discussions will consider evidence-based strategies, including investments in climate adaptation, scientific forest management, and habitat restoration to reduce human–wildlife conflict. The session will also emphasise the need for climate-resilient infrastructure, community forestry, participatory forest management, sustainable agricultural practices, and the capacity building of the community address these issues.

The Government of Kerala will establish a coordinated system in which policy, technology, and community action work together to protect Kerala’s environment while ensuring the safety and well-being of its people.
